The Re-write
By Molly-Ann Leikin
An Italian guy wrote an opera.
He had high hopes for it, since his others were great successes.
How could the new one miss?
But on opening night, he was booed out of the theatre.
And he fled the city.
Reviewers were consistently brutal.
“Lucky are the deaf.”
Our composer was devastated.
He lay in the dark, not touching a piano for five years.
Then he rewrote his opera.
This time, it was a smash. This time it became a classic.
The composer? Puccini.
The opera? Madame Butterfly.
Write well today, no matter what anybody says.
You can do it.
You absolutely can.
I’m already proud of you.
