From the Record Deal to the Road – and Home Again.
Breakthrough Band Consulting!
By Molly-Ann Leikin, songwriting consultant
I’m very excited to announce that I’ve expanded my one-on-one consulting to include bands in pop, rock, country, Christian and alternative genres.
My new consulting partner, Jerry Corbetta, has been on the road since he could say “Mama, where’s the bus?”
There’s nothing Jerry doesn’t know about the creative and business aspects of being in a hot band, and he has generously offered to make his expertise and experience available to my clients on an exclusive basis.
His songs are some of the most performed material on Classic Rock radio. He was in Sugarloaf, wrote and sang “Green Eyed lady” and “Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You.” For four years, he was part of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Now he is one of The Classic Rock All Stars.
Before offering you our personal advice, guidance and referrals, of course we want to hear and see all of your strengths, and especially your fingerprint, as a creative unit. Assuming your band and your material are ready for the marketplace, we’re happy to refer you to everyone contacting us looking for exceptional new artists in your genre.
Everything is covered in our consulting fee – including if your work is almost there, we’ll give you our personal, professional input on how to tweak just that much to finally get it all the way home.
When your band consults with Jerry and me, we’ll carefully watch your DVD, listen to your CD several times and answer all your questions, plus the ones submitted below, by our clients all over the world.
l. How do I get a record deal? We kill and sell out locally, we’re hot on the Internet, but how do we graduate to the major leagues and get a meaningful deal? The indies are fine to start out, but I really want this to work. This isn’t just a hobby – it’s my whole life.
2. How do I find and choose the right manager? The one we’ve got now isn’t doing a thing for us. Everybody else – but not us.
3. When I’m offered a deal, how do I know if it’s a good deal? I really want to be signed, but I sure don’t want to get tied up with the wrong people.
4. I think I’m a pretty good writer. But how important are the actual songs to my band? Isn’t our sound more important?
5. How does my band make money – I mean REAL money – not the dollar three-eighty I’m getting now.
6. How do I get gigs? Should I use a booking agency? If so, how do I know it’s the right one for my band? What’s their percentage? How long a deal should I make?
What should I NOT do?
7. What do I look for in an agreement with a booking agency? Should I have somebody who knows look it over? Any lawyers you can recommend? How about an agency, too?
8. We’re always on the road. How do I find a reliable travel agent? I’ve tried to do everything myself online, but we’ve been stranded more places than I care to remember. How do I find the right travel agent and what should I expect from him/her? Anybody you can recommend?
9. I’ve been in lots of bands. We’re good together, we’re happening, then one guy leaves and it’s over. Everybody’s got an ego, everybody’s sensitive – I don’t want to be a solo act – so what can you tell us – quick - to keep my band together?
10. We have to carry our gear on the road. We had an old pick-up, but it kept breaking down. Then we had a bus and that wasn’t much better. Rest in Peace. I’ve heard of Backline. What exactly do they do? What’s your experience been with them? How can I make this work from a business point of view? In the long run, what’s the best way to move my equipment from gig to gig? I really don’t want to spend the money.
11. We need exposure. What do you think about being an opening act for a big name? How can we make that work for our band? How can I promote us on their dime?
12. Based on your experience, what can you suggest to help my band write, perform, work better and stay together as a group?
Jerry and I can help you get what you want.
