“Don’t Be So Sensitive”
by Molly-Ann Leikin
All my life, people have been telling me I’m too sensitive.
I used to think there was something wrong with me.
They kept yelling, “you’re too sensitive, don’t be so sensitive”, and although I didn’t yet have the emotional tools to fight back, I knew on some level “they” were wrong.
I am sensitive, just like you, but I celebrate that.
It’s not a penalty or a problem, it’s a gift.
If we, as artists weren’t missing our armor so our nerve endings were unprotected, where would our songs come from? Surely not from the folks who bury their feelings because it’s unsettling and uncomfortable.
It’s our job to feel what civilians can’t express, and write it all down.
We suffer, they get something to sing.
The next time someone tells you not to be so sensitive, tell him he’s lucky you are, because without you there would be no music at all.
Tell them they’re lucky to have you in their world, and tell them I said so.
Write well today. I’m in your corner.
