Song Collaborating – Writing My Words to Your Music
Songwriting Tips by Molly-Ann Leikin
There's
nothing I love better than writing songs, and it's exciting for me to create original lyrics
to your original melody. Whether it's for the soundtrack of a feature film, for a TV movie, a
TV theme, a jingle or a hit single for somebody's country or pop CD, I listen to your tune a
hundred times, hunting for clues hiding inside the melody, until I finally hear what your music
is saying to me, tells me where the words go, and what they want to say.
It's a magical feeling to connect with someone – usually a stranger - this way – and create
a hit song together as I translate your feelings from little black notes into English so everybody
can sing along.
It's even more fantastic to turn on the radio or the TV a few months later, and hear what we
did together – over and over and over again.
A number one country song earns $250,000. a week, every week it's number one, plus $250,000.
a year, every year thereafter, for the writer's whole life plus 70 years. Pretty nice payday,
right? A pop/adult contemporary song earns even more.
